How it works

Can WhatsApp call a landline?

No. WhatsApp calls reach WhatsApp accounts, not phone numbers, so a landline is out of range however good your connection is. The same goes for a bank switchboard, a doctorโ€™s surgery, a hotel desk or anybody who does not use the app.

Below is a keypad that does reach them. Type the number and the price appears before anything dials.

01Why not

Why WhatsApp cannot do it

A WhatsApp call never touches the phone network. It is data sent from your copy of the app to somebody elseโ€™s copy of the app, and the phone number involved is only a username: it is how WhatsApp finds the right account, not something it dials.

A landline has no account to find. Neither does the switchboard at your bank, the reception desk at a clinic, or a relative who has never installed anything. There is nothing at the other end for the app to connect to, which is why no setting, subscription or workaround inside WhatsApp reaches one.

Reaching an ordinary number means handing the call to the ordinary phone network at some point. That is the entire difference between the two rows in the middle of the table below and the two at the edges.

What each one actually reaches

WhatsAppOther WhatsApp accounts, anywhere, over data.Any phone number that is not a WhatsApp account. Landlines, switchboards, support lines, hotels, clinics.
Messenger, FaceTime, TelegramOther accounts on the same app.The same. All of them dial an account, not a number.
Your mobile carrierEvery phone number on earth, landlines included.Nothing, and that is why it is the expensive option. International direct dial and roaming are charged per minute.

03Cost

Does WhatsApp charge for international calls?

No, and there is no catch in that answer. WhatsApp does not bill per minute, an international call costs exactly what a local one does, and the only thing it consumes is mobile data or wifi. On a home connection it is free outright.

Which is why price is usually the wrong question here. The constraint on WhatsApp was never how much a call costs, it is whether the call can be placed at all, and a free call to a number it cannot dial is not cheaper than a paid one. The moment the person you need is on a landline, or is a bank, or simply does not have the app, the comparison stops being about money.

Calls that do reach any number are charged, because the phone network that delivers them charges us. Ours are published in full before you sign up, per minute, with part of a minute counting as a full one.

04Rates

What calling a landline costs

Per minute, from a US caller ID. The price is read off the digits of the number you type, so a landline and a mobile are never quoted at one blended rate.

CallingLandlineMobile
India$0.15$0.12
Pakistan$0.49$0.59
Philippines$0.59$0.89
Nigeria$0.69$0.69
Poland$0.29$0.59
Italy$0.07$0.15

Worth reading that table twice. A landline in India costs more than a mobile, which is the reverse of what almost everyone assumes. Anything that asks you to pick โ€œmobile or landlineโ€ and quotes one blended price is wrong in both directions.

Rates last changed 18 August 2026. Your first call is free for up to 60 seconds. Every country we price, or check one number.

05Limits

What it cannot do

  • It cannot reach emergency services.

Not 999, 911, 112 or their equivalents, and it cannot report your location to a dispatcher. Keep a phone that can.

  • The recipient sees a number we assign.

Not your own mobile number. If a bank verifies you by the number you are calling from, that check will not pass, so expect security questions instead.

  • It is outbound only.

No incoming calls and no texts on the shared number. Most banks also reject internet phone numbers for two-factor codes on purpose, so keep your usual number for those.

06Questions

Common questions

Can you call a landline from WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp calling only works between WhatsApp accounts, so both people need the app installed and registered. A landline has no app and no account, which means there is no way for a WhatsApp call to reach one. The same is true of a bank switchboard, a government helpline, a hotel front desk or anyone who simply does not use WhatsApp. It is not a limitation of your connection or your plan, and no setting changes it.

Does WhatsApp charge for international calls?

No. WhatsApp does not charge per minute, and an international WhatsApp call costs the same as a local one, which is nothing beyond the mobile data or wifi it uses. That is genuinely free, and it is also why the question is usually the wrong one: the constraint on WhatsApp is not price, it is reach. A free call you cannot place to the number you need is not cheaper than a paid one, and the moment the person you want is a landline or is not on the app, price stops being the deciding factor.

Can you call a WhatsApp number from a regular phone?

Yes, but not through WhatsApp. A WhatsApp account is registered to an ordinary mobile number, so you can ring that number the normal way and their phone will ring as a normal call, charged at your usual international rate. What you cannot do is place a WhatsApp call from a phone that does not have WhatsApp, and you cannot reach an account whose underlying number you do not have.

How can I call a landline abroad without a phone plan?

From a browser. Airlophone places an ordinary phone call over the internet, so the landline you dial rings exactly as it would from a handset, with no SIM card, no app and no mobile account involved. Rates are per minute and published in full before you sign up, starting at $0.02 a minute, and the first call is free for up to 60 seconds so you can hear that it works before paying anything.

Is there a free way to call a landline from WhatsApp?

No, because the problem is not cost. WhatsApp has no mechanism for dialling a phone number at any price, free or paid, so there is no setting, subscription or workaround inside the app that reaches a landline. Services that do reach landlines connect to the phone network and are charged per minute, because somebody has to pay the network that delivers the call.

Why can WhatsApp send a message to any number but not call a landline?

It cannot do either. WhatsApp messages also travel between WhatsApp accounts rather than over the phone network, which is why a message to somebody without the app never arrives and why the app asks you to invite them instead. Text messages and calls that reach any number are carried by the mobile network; everything inside WhatsApp is carried by the internet to another copy of WhatsApp.

Will the person I call see my number?

They see a number we assign, not your own mobile number. If you need a specific number to appear, you can rent one or verify a number you already own, but for calling a bank or a clinic the important part is usually that the call arrives at all. Expect a few extra security questions if an institution normally recognises you by your caller ID.

Call the landline WhatsApp cannot reach

Any published number, from a browser tab. No app to install, no SIM, and the first minute is free without a card.
