How to make a call from a laptop without a phone
Type the number below and press Call. There is no app to install, no SIM card, and no second phone involved. The price for that exact number appears before anything dials.

01What you need
What you actually need
A browser.
Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, on Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Nothing is installed, so this works on a borrowed laptop or a machine you have no permission to add software to.
A microphone.
The one built into the laptop is enough. A wired headset is better, mostly because it stops the speakers feeding back into the call.
The number, in international format.
Country code first, then the number without its leading zero. If you are not sure what a number is or what it costs, paste it into the checker and it will tell you the country, the type of line and the price.
02Free options
The free options, and what they actually reach
Free calling from a laptop exists, and most of it will not reach the number you are trying to call. The distinction that decides it is whether a service dials a phone number or an account inside its own app.
| Option | What it needs | What it cannot reach |
|---|---|---|
| Google Voice | A Google account verified with a US phone number. Personal signup is offered in the US only. | Anyone outside the US cannot register at all. Calls past the US and Canada are charged. |
| Skype | Nothing. It was retired on 5 May 2025. | Anything. Guides and AI assistants still recommend it, and the service no longer exists. |
| WhatsApp, Messenger, FaceTime | The person you are calling to be on the same app, with an account. | A landline, a switchboard, a support line, or anybody who does not use the app. |
| Airlophone | A browser and a microphone. No app and no SIM card. | Emergency numbers. Everything else is an ordinary call at a published per-minute rate. |
Your first call here is free for up to 60 seconds, which is enough to hear that it works. After that it is charged per minute at the rates below.
03How
Why a browser can place a real phone call
The browser carries the audio over the internet to a carrier, and the carrier hands the call to the ordinary phone network. From the other end it is a normal incoming call: it rings a normal phone, works with phone menus, and holds a queue for as long as you are willing to wait.
Nothing about it needs a phone on your side. The laptop is the handset, and the network cannot tell the difference. The longer version is here, including what happens to the price before the call is placed.
04Cost
What a call costs
Prices are per minute and published before you sign up. These are the six countries this question is most often asked from, and the price is read off the digits, so a landline and a mobile are never quoted at one blended rate.
| Calling | Landline | Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $0.02 | $0.02 |
| India | $0.15 | $0.12 |
| United Kingdom | $0.07 | $0.09 |
| Canada | $0.02 | $0.02 |
| Australia | $0.07 | $0.25 |
| South Africa | $1.49 | $1.15 |
Worth reading that table twice. Calling a landline in India and South Africa costs more than calling a mobile, which is the reverse of what almost everyone assumes. Anything that asks you to pick โmobile or landlineโ and quotes one blended price is wrong in both directions, and it is wrong on the corridors people call most.
Rates last changed 18 August 2026. Billed per minute, and part of a minute counts as a full one. Every country we price.
05Limits
What it cannot do
Emergency services.
It cannot reach 911, 999, 112 or their equivalents, and cannot report your location to a dispatcher. Keep a phone that can.
Caller ID.
Outbound calls carry a number we assign, not your own. If an institution verifies you by the number you are calling from, that check will not pass.
Receiving calls or texts.
Calling is outbound only. Most banks also deliberately reject internet phone numbers for two-factor codes, so keep your normal number for those.
06Questions
Common questions
Can you make a phone call from a laptop without a phone?
Yes. A browser can place a call to an ordinary phone number over the internet, with no SIM card and no mobile account involved. The laptop handles the audio and a carrier hands the call to the phone network, so the number you dial rings exactly as it would from a handset. You need a browser, a microphone, and the number in international format.
Do I need to install anything?
No. There is no app, no extension and no download. The dialer runs in the browser tab you already have open, which is also why it works on a borrowed laptop, a hotel computer or a work machine where you cannot install software.
Can I call a landline from my laptop?
Yes, and this is the difference that matters. WhatsApp, Messenger and FaceTime call an account inside their own app, so both people have to be using it. A landline, a bank switchboard, a government helpline or a doctor's office has no app account, which is why those services cannot reach it. Airlophone places an ordinary phone call, so any published number works.
Is there a way to call from a laptop for free?
Partly, and it depends where you are. Google Voice calls US and Canadian numbers at no charge, but personal signup is offered in the US only and needs a US phone number to verify, so it is unavailable to most people asking this question. Skype was retired in May 2025. App-to-app calling is free but cannot reach a number that is not on the app. On Airlophone your first call is free for up to 60 seconds, and after that calls are charged per minute at rates published before you sign up.
Do I need my own phone number to use it?
No. You do not need a phone number, a SIM card or a mobile plan of any kind. You sign up with an email address and add credit, and calls go out with a number we assign. If you want the person you call to see a number that belongs to you, that is a separate rented number rather than a requirement for calling.
Does it work on Windows, a Mac or a Chromebook?
All three, plus Linux. The only requirement is a modern browser and a working microphone, so the operating system makes no difference. A wired headset usually sounds better than the built-in microphone on a laptop, mostly because it keeps the speakers from feeding back into the call.
