How to call an international number in 2026
Type the number with a plus sign, country code and local number. Do not guess the local format. The keypad below identifies the destination and shows the price before you place the call.

01The format
Four checks before you call
01
Start with the full number
Ask for the number in international format. It starts with a plus sign, then a country code, then the local number. A US number becomes +1 212 555 0123. A UK London number becomes +44 20 7946 0123.
02
Do not copy the local leading zero by default
The leading zero in many local numbers is a trunk prefix for calls inside that country. Remove it after the country code unless the country keeps it. Italy is the common exception: Rome is +39 06, not +39 6.
03
Check whether the number is actually reachable
A domestic toll-free number such as US 800, 888 or 877 may reject a call from abroad. A bank, airline or government agency often has a separate geographic international number. Use that direct number when one is published.
04
See the rate before calling
International calls are priced by destination and sometimes by number type. A mobile and landline can cost different amounts. Enter the exact number so the rate can be resolved before the call starts.
02Country rules
Country rules still matter
Country codes are not enough when a number was published for local callers. Our country guides explain the exit code, local number pattern and price for each destination. Start with the destination you need to reach.
03Questions
Questions
What is the format for an international phone number?
Use a plus sign, the destination country code, then the local number. For example, a New York number is +1 212 555 0123 and a London number is +44 20 7946 0123. Do not include the exit code of the country you are calling from when you use a browser dialer.
Do I remove the first zero when calling internationally?
Usually. The first zero is often a local trunk prefix, so it is removed after the country code. Italy is an important exception because Italian landline numbers keep their leading zero. Check the country-specific guide when the number matters.
Can I call an international number from a browser?
Yes. Type the full number into Airlophone, allow microphone access, review the rate and place the call. The person you are calling receives an ordinary phone call. You do not need an app, a SIM card or a mobile plan.
Why will an international call not connect?
The most common causes are a missing country code, a trunk zero that should have been removed, a toll-free number that only accepts domestic calls, or a number written for a local dialling plan. Ask the organisation for its international direct-dial number if the published number starts with a domestic toll-free prefix.
How much does it cost to call an international number?
It depends on the country and the number type. Airlophone shows the exact per-minute rate for the number before a call starts. Published rates begin at $0.03 a minute across 221 countries.
