Can I call my bank, or a government office?
Yes, and this is what most people are here for. Any published number works: banks, embassies, immigration lines, tax offices, utilities, a landlord. You are placing an ordinary phone call, so anything you could reach from a normal phone, you can reach from here.
What about phone menus, press 1 for English?
The keypad stays live for the whole call, so you can work through a phone tree exactly as you would on a handset: press 1, enter an account number, key in a reference. Nothing about the menu knows or cares that you are calling from a browser.
What if I am on hold for forty minutes?
The line holds. Long queues are the normal case for the numbers people call here, so the call is built to survive them rather than drop at twenty minutes. You are charged per minute for the whole call, hold time included, the same as any phone.
Can I get a refund?
If you have not spent any of it, ask within 30 days of your payment and we will return it to the card you paid with. After that, credit stays on your account rather than coming back as money, and it does not expire, so nothing you paid for is lost. A call that rings out, hits a busy tone or never connects is not charged at all, so there is nothing to claim back for one. An account suspended for fraud or abuse is not eligible.
What number does the person I call see?
By default, a number we assign. If you rent a number of your own you can show that instead, and then a callback reaches you. Either way it is not your real number, so a bank that verifies you by the number you called from will ask you to confirm another way.
Can I use this to receive a verification code?
Probably not. You can rent a number that receives calls and texts, but most banks reject internet phone numbers for verification codes on purpose. Keep your normal number for two-factor codes.
Can I call emergency services?
No, and this is the one worth reading twice. We cannot reach 911, 999, 112 or any equivalent, and we cannot tell a dispatcher where you are. Keep a mobile or a landline for emergencies.
Does the person I am calling need anything?
No. You are calling their ordinary phone number, so their phone rings the way it always does. No account, no app, no internet connection, and it works on a landline.
What happens if the call does not connect?
You are not charged for a call that does not connect.
Do I need an account?
Yes. You sign in with Google, or with a link sent to your email, which takes a few seconds and needs no password and no card. The account is what holds your credit and your call history, so a balance you top up is still there the next time you need it. Signing in with Google shares your name, email address and profile picture with us, and nothing else.
Do my credits expire?
No. Top up once and whatever is left is still there on the next trip, next year, whenever you next need to call.
